When a sample test is useful
Not every project needs a test. It is most useful when the product or material behavior is uncertain, or when two routes need to be compared on real product.
- Sticky, dusty, fragile or poorly flowing products
- Liquids with particles, high viscosity or foaming
- A new film, laminate or pouch that has not been run before
- A tight fill tolerance or a very small dose
- A choice between two packaging routes or dosing methods
Agree on samples before shipping
Discuss representative product and packaging samples, handling conditions and the quantity needed. Confirm shipping instructions with the team before sending material.
- Product from a normal production batch, in the agreed quantity
- Packaging material in the production specification: roll film at the correct width, printed if registration matters, or pouches, cartons or labels
- A safety data sheet for chemical, flammable or otherwise hazardous products
- Storage conditions, such as frozen, chilled or dry, and how long the product stays stable
- Your reference ID on the parcel and in the shipping documents
Define what the trial should establish
Agree on the proposed configuration and the measurements that will help answer your selection questions.
- Fill consistency and measurement method
- Pack formation and seal evaluation
- Product behavior during feeding and dosing
- Output, stoppages and reject handling under the recorded conditions
Agree how results are measured
State before the test how each result will be judged. For fill, agree how many packs are weighed and against which target and tolerance. For seals, agree whether packs are checked visually, by hand or by a leak or drop check you specify. For output, agree whether the figure is packs formed or good packs over a timed run.
Agree what you receive
Decide in advance what the test should produce for you: a written record, photographs or video of the run, and whether packed samples are returned for your own checks. Returning samples may involve shipping cost and handling conditions to agree.
Keep conditions with the result
A useful test record identifies the product, packaging material, machine configuration, settings and observations. A result for one material or configuration is not an unconditional promise for another.
What a test does not show
A test is a short run on the configuration available for testing. It shows how your product and material behave, and it helps settle the configuration. It does not by itself establish long-term output, the result with a different product batch or film, or the performance of units that were not part of the test.
